Gritty, authentic and full of heart, The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton is the classic tale that revolutionized the young adult novel.

The Outsiders tells the story of two weeks in the life of a teenage boy as he struggles to stay with his brothers, stay true to himself and “stay gold” following the death of his parents. For Ponyboy, life is a series of conflicts. Greaser against Soc. Rich against poor. Violence against reconciliation. As tensions mount in a neighborhood war between the poor greasers and the rich Socs, Ponyboy grapples with the stereotypes placed upon him as he searches for his own identity and place in society.

When S.E. Hinton published The Outsiders in 1967 – a novel she began writing at age 15 and sold at 17 – the idea of a teenager writing fiction for her peers was practically unheard of. Hinton felt that the required reading in school was not an honest reflection of the lives teenagers experienced in her hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Her novel would present adolescent characters who were the opposite of everything a teenager, by adult standards, should be. As a result, it was a hit with young readers across the country.

Since its debut, the book has sold more than 15 million copies, become a steady feature on school reading lists, been adapted into a film by Francis Ford Coppola, and helped shape an entire literary genre marketed to young adults.

As poignant and relevant today as the day it was first published, The Outsiders urges a divisive world to remember that, as Ponyboy says, we all “see the same sunset,” and that while we may be the ones who create great divides between each other, we can also be the ones to bridge them.

The signed limited edition of The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton is presented in three states: Lettered, Numbered and Artist editions.

The Outsiders AE for a Christmas gift

I ordered this Artist Edition for my niece upon reading some reviews and getting different perspectives. I was initially going to send her my copy of the Numbered Edition, but a lot of feedback recommended that I send her the Artist Edition as it was more appealing to youth. I am glad to have gotten this feedback, because my niece loved the AE. She is also a fan of the movie and now has a pristine copy of the book by Suntup on her bookshelf. Perhaps when she is older I’ll send her the Numbered Edition. Thank you, Suntup!

Amazing Artwork

Like many, my first exposure to The Outsiders was in school where it was required reading. As with many books that were required reading in school, I didn’t appreciate The Outsiders as much then as I do now. For those that do appreciate this book, whether upon initial reading or with proper seasoning that comes with age, this edition of The Outsiders will not disappoint.

Suntup always does a wonderful job with their editions, but I feel that this one is better than most. It feels like a lot of love an appreciation went into this edition. From the denim style slipcase to the bonus content, you can tell that this was a personal publication. What sets this book out from other Suntup editions is the inclusion of art by Jeff Echevarria. Again, Suntup always does a great job finding exceptional artists to illustrate their books, but Mr. Echevarria’s art is simply amazing. The illustrations have the detail of a photograph along with the emotional connection of a painting. This style of art compliments the type of story that is The Outsiders. The art has the hyper detail of a formative memory, but seen through the subjective lens of young eyes.

The Outsiders isn’t a book that I consider to be a personal favorite, but the treatment that Suntup has given to this book keeps me coming back to it. This is primarily due to the evocative artwork by Jeff Echevarria, but also because of the high quality binding and materials that go into every Suntup Edition.

Another lovely edition from Suntup

Binding, illustrations, and presentation of text are all gorgeous. Lovely to have on the shelf, although it feels like a bit of an outlier amidst my other Suntup volumes, all of which reside somewhere on the horror spectrum.
