One of the most chilling cautionary tales of the 20th century, The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood is a tour de force of dystopian fiction.

It is the world of the near future, and Offred is a Handmaid in the home of the Commander and his wife. She is allowed out only once a day to the market, she is not permitted to read and she is hoping the Commander makes her pregnant; as her very existence is only valued if her ovaries are viable.

Offred can remember the years before, when she was an independent woman, had a job of her own, a husband and child. Now those days seem far away. For in their wake, the land that was once the United States has become the Republic of Gilead, a monotheocracy that has reacted to social unrest and a sharply declining birth rate by reverting to and going beyond the repressive intolerance of the original Puritans. The regime takes the Book of Genesis absolutely at its word, with bizarre consequences for the women and men in its population.

Unpredictable, horrifying, and altogether convincing, The Handmaid’s Tale is an uncompromising portrait of totalitarianism and institutional misogyny. The novel explores themes of subjugated women in a patriarchal society, loss of female agency and individuality, and the various means by which they resist and attempt to gain individuality and independence.

In 2018, Atwood reflected on her process writing The Handmaid’s Tale: “I made a rule for myself. I would not include anything that human beings had not already done in some other place or time, or for which the technology did not already exist. I did not wish to be accused of dark, twisted inventions, or of misrepresenting the human potential for deplorable behavior.”

The Handmaid’s Tale won the 1985 Governor General’s Award, and the first Arthur C. Clarke Award in 1987. It has been adapted into a 1990 film, a 2000 opera, and a 2017 television series.

Letterpress Done Flawlessly

I love this edition.
I wish it actually did have Lithuanian Folk Songs on the tape, I have a tape deck but since I'm almost positive it's the Audible copy, I haven't played it yet, and may not.

This is a special one, the case is beautifully done, the spine label is among Suntup's more interesting.
The paper wrapping is unique.

The half leather bind with the foil stamped figure is just gorgeous, appealing to both the eye and touch, and the cloth feels a unique and contrasting tactile element, it's beautiful to hold.

The letterpress is next level, just "kissing" the paper, indiscernible to the touch of most.
I prefer more definite imprints I can feel easily, but I believe this is considered a flaw?, so this edition gives a fantastic impression of what really good letterpress looks and feels like.
One thing I can't seem to figure is how one gets those dynamics using the same cylinder press.
Suntup always raising curiosity levels.

Paper is again, not my favourite (I won't get my favourite in a Numbered - bar The Lottery - unless I get rich) but suits this edition wonderfully, each element simply adds to the detail oriented design, it's one of the most beautiful books I've seen in quite some time.

Next level really, a few tweaks and it could easily be a Lettered edition in my humble opinion.

I could gush further but I've just realised how differing in length my reviews are to others.
Won't stop me but it might make me more succinct if I can be.

Beautiful.

Suntup does it again with another finely crafted edition.

Each numbered edition that has been published by Suntup is of very high quality. This one is no exception. Handmaids Tale is so well done that it should be a lettered edition.

Superbly crafted book. So much attention to detail! The different textures and feel of the endsheets, the materials on the covers of the book and the housing are almost too much for the senses, making this a top shelf book! The cassette is a nice creative touch.

Stunning Lettered, I mean Numbered The Handmaid's Tale

Stunning Lettered, I mean Numbered The Handmaid's Tale - this book has the amazing ability to take the 1st edition US cover art and transform it to leather and fine cloth that is almost 3D and so gorgeous!

Outstanding

The Handmaid's Tale is yet another lovely book from Suntup that shows their commitment to craftmanship and utilizing the finest materials. The bonus cassette puzzles me, however (unless it's just decorative). I haven't had a cassette player since I replaced my last one with a CD player in a truck back in the 90s. The book and its traycase, though, are probably the finest I own.
