An immediate bestseller upon its original publication in 1939, Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo is a searing portrayal of war that has stunned and galvanized generations of readers.

When Joe Bonham, a young American soldier serving in World War I, awakens in a hospital bed after being caught in the blast of an exploding artillery shell, he gradually realizes that he has lost his arms, legs, and all of his face, but that his mind functions perfectly, leaving him a prisoner in his own body. As Joe drifts between fantasy and reality, he remembers his old life with his family and girlfriend, and reflects upon the myths and realities of war.

Published two days after the declaration of war in Europe and more than two years before the United States joined World War II, Trumbo’s stark and troubling masterpiece of uncompromising brutality went on to become the most influential protest novel of the Vietnam era and an undisputed classic of antiwar literature.

Upon its release, The New York Times raved, “Mr. Trumbo sets this story down almost without pause or punctuation, and with a fury accounting to elegance,” while Saturday Review promised, “It is a book that can never be forgotten by anyone who reads it.”

Johnny Got His Gun won one of the earliest National Book Awards: the Most Original Book of 1939. A 1971 film adaptation was written for the screen and directed by Trumbo himself.

The signed limited edition of Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo is presented in three states: Lettered, Numbered and Artist editions.

Johnny Got His Gun

One of my top ten favorite novels, and I am supremely satisfied, as always, with what Suntup has done with it.

Very pleased with my purchase

I had been looking for a nice copy of Johnny Got His Gun for quite some time and was very pleased to find that Suntup had released an edition of it. It is very well made and the illustrations are beautiful, so it will make a wonderful addition to my collection.

Anti war novel to end all Anti war novels.

I do not know where to begin. Forget the magnificent production values, the book as a literary genre is beyond outstanding. Sadly many will ignore it as possibly not relevant, but it is and it will always be. I actually tried to read it years ago, but since I was in the Viet Nam war , USA ARMY, I could not handle it. All these years later I started to read it again. And at page 111 I had to stop. It was once again suffocating me with hits horrific descriptions of being embodied in mind but with almost no body parts to say to the world I am a human being. I stopped for a month and then went back re -reading it from page one.
Reading it this time not only has an outsider, but as Joe himself, trying to imagine the horror of it all and the frustration of being in a fractured body unable to speak, see, hear or move and more.
While this may not be a book of delight, or of fairy tales, it sure is a book , I think, EVERY one should read. Addressing the issue of " what if there was a war and no one came ".
This book is a literary masterpiece, though a challenging one; not for the weak of heart. But all the more one that needs to be read NOW, with all the craziness of perpetual war going on.
Buy a copy before they run out at SUNTUP.
Challenge yourself to a literary masterpiece !
