Originally published as a series of six volumes, Michael McDowell’s Blackwater is a Southern Gothic saga of suspense, mystery and terror.

When the gracious and beautiful Elinor Dammert arrives in Perdido, Alabama on Easter Sunday in 1919, she is a stranger in the small town, desperate to fit in. She sets her sights on marrying Oscar Caskey, the eldest son of Perdido’s first family; but beneath Elinor’s charm and beauty lies a shocking secret—and beneath the waters of the Perdido River, Elinor’s true form will soon be discovered, changing the Caskey family and the town of Perdido forever.

Upon its publication in 1983, the atmospheric and character-driven family drama of Blackwater not only defied the horror genre, but elevated it. Michael McDowell was proclaimed “the finest writer of paperback originals in America” by Stephen King, and “one of the best writers of horror in this country” by Peter Straub.

Now collected as a single volume novel, Blackwater continues to be discovered and praised by new generations. One recent reviewer wrote, “Operatic, epic, and scary… Blackwater is a Southern Gothic to drown all other Southern Gothics in a muddy river. Sink into this one. You won’t regret it.”

An amazing book of family dysfunction with horror thrown in

If I had the money I would buy the remaining 8 copies and give them as gifts. This is a 5 star book and more.

A POWERFUL MODERN CLASSIC

I am grateful to Suntup for introducing me to this marvellous book. As always with Suntup, their edition does full justice to the material. The art-work is beautiful and completely captures the mood of the story. And what a story! Totally mesmerising, strangely haunting, incredibly moving and gloriously written - this work deserves to become an acknowledged classic.

A must read.

Blackwater Michael McDowells Magnus Opus is a must read. Aside from the books physical looks its literary merit is and was beyond my expectations. How he could write so long of a book with, I think, NO swear words or explicit sex, is beyond me. And while it was a horror novel of sorts, the horror played a backdrop to the characters behaviors and motives and as well to the setting of home and place; community.
The book captured my attention immediately. What a cast of dysfunctional characters, to be disliked and loved at times. A true Southern Gothic novel about a dysfunctional family who manages to function in their dysfunction. A true co-dependent example of a family that perhaps exemplifies most of us who are in the denial of that fact. But in the end, it is all about LOVE, given, denied and suppressed; typically a given in all families.
The only minor complaint I could possibly have is that I would have loved to see an artist rendition of what the " monster " looked like. It seemed to me to be something akin to " The Creature From the Black Lagoon "
I did Not want this book to end. Buy it before it is gone. It is truly a fabulous read.

One of the best book I own

It is my first purchase from Suntup and I can only say that I was amazed by the beauty of the book, by the quality of the binding. An exceptional edition. The packaging is perfect and very safe, really fast shipping.

A horror classic finally gets its due

This book means so much to me personally -- I published the original e-book versions of the series back when the world was just rediscovering Michael McDowell (Valancourt now publishes nearly all of his books) -- and I'm sure Michael's estate and reps must be absolutely thrilled with this beautifully crafted (and ginormous!) edition of this crazy southern gothic horror classic.

From those thin little paperback originals with the wild cover art (which is included here) to this great chunker of a fancy hardcover -- who ever would have imagined?!

Superb work from Suntup yet again, with a great binding, beautiful art, and a fun "reptilian" slipcase. Truly a gorgeous addition to my bookshelves and a really lovely cap to my personal journey with this legendary horror epic.
