Relentless and endlessly terrifying, Hannibal by Thomas Harris is the bestselling sequel to The Silence of the Lambs, and the third novel in the Hannibal series.

Seven years have passed since the events of The Silence of the Lambs. Hannibal Lecter is on the run in Florence, Italy and for three individuals, the final hunt has begun: a multimillionaire who Hannibal left horrifically maimed, a corrupt Italian policeman, and FBI agent Clarice Starling, who once stood before Lecter and has never been the same. All of them, in their separate ways, want to find Dr. Lecter, and all three will get their wish. But will they live long enough to savor the reward?

The publication of Hannibal in 1999 was considered one of the most eagerly anticipated literary events of the decade, with Thomas Harris taking us once again into the mind of his iconic serial killer, crafting a chilling portrait of insidiously evolving evil. Peers and critics alike hailed the novel a tour de force of psychological suspense. Stephen King opined, “Is it as good as Red Dragon and The Silence of the Lambs? No, this one is better. It is, in fact, one of the two most frightening popular novels of our time, the other being The Exorcist.” The Los Angeles Times raved, “Hannibal speaks to the imagination, to the feelings, to the passions, to exalted senses and to debased ones. Harris’s voice will be heard for a while.”

In 2001, Hannibal was adapted into a film directed by Ridley Scott, in which Anthony Hopkins reprised his Oscar-winning performance as Hannibal Lecter.

Hannibal Lecter Would Approve!

If you're one of those who were lucky enough to have nabbed the previous Suntup Thomas Harris novels, then you're aware of the absolute beauty and craftmanship of those editions. Hannibal continues this trend, with an amazing level of quality, that is evident in the brocade wrapped slipcase and full Japanese cloth binding on the novel. Open the pages and you're greeted by French marbled endsheets and amazing illustrations by Jason Mowry -- the latter which is just icing on the proverbial cake.

I could not be happier with this numbered edition. As usual, Paul has outdone himself and set the bar higher with this release!

Dream a Little Dream

Thomas Harris was the tipping point for me, prior to that I was on the fence, I don't collect King, so I didn't buy Misery or Eye Of The Dragon, and yes, I regret that immensely, but Red Dragon?
My most read novel other than Alice in Wonderland, no other editions particularly jumped at me (somehow The Road got past me).

Fast forward to Hannibal (and broaching the point of the review) and I'm ecstatic.
I have one issue I'll get to, but first I'm going to gush.

Jason Mowry.
What an amazing talent.
Now my second favourite artist behind Dave McKean and I love all arts, so that's quite an achievement.
Glorious detailed pictures that are derived from too many techniques for me to identify, lush colours subtly applied to intimidating figures and elaborate backgrounds, whether frail figures or not, I could write an entire review on the art alone.

Green isn't a colour I'm fond of but somehow Suntup take shades I really dislike and turn them into gorgeous aesthetics for every book they've used them on.
It's beautiful.
Stunning in every way and surprises are always nice.
The spine labels for all three I love, not sure quite why, but to me they stand out.
Lovely paper (as usual) and a lovely combination typography.
Epic endsheets.

I won't lie, I wish it was letterpress, but that's not my issue.
My issue lies in the silk for the slipcase.
It doesn't cover the top or bottom ends with silk as applied to the first two novels, which irritates my OCD tendencies.
I don't know much about case making so I recognize it may be logistics or supply or something entirely outside my thinking.
It's a pretty petty issue tho, I'll likely never mention it when discussing the books because whilst it isn't uniform, it is beautiful, and I'll take all the beauty I can get these days.

Please do Hannibal Rising?
I'll appreciate it even if no-one else does. ;)
