First published in 1974, Jaws by Peter Benchley is a riveting novel of suspense and horror that terrified millions of readers and inspired an iconic film franchise.

When a great white shark preys upon the small seaside resort town of Amity, New York, police chief Martin Brody is one of the few residents taking the threat seriously. Nearly everyone in Amity wants to downplay the shark’s presence to not scare away the tourists. But when the body count starts to rise, Brody realizes he must find a way to kill it, even if means putting his own life on the line.

When Peter Benchley wrote Jaws in the early 1970s, he meticulously researched all available data about shark behavior. Over the ensuing decades, Benchley was actively engaged with scientists and filmmakers on expeditions around the world as they expanded their knowledge of sharks.

During this time, there was an unprecedented upswing in the number of sharks killed to make shark-fin soup, and Benchley worked with governments and nonprofits to sound the alarm for shark conservation. He encouraged each new generation of Jaws fans to enjoy his riveting tale and to channel their excitement into support and protection of these magnificent, prehistoric apex predators.

This edition of Jaws contains bonus content from Peter Benchley’s archives, including the original typed title page, a brainstorming list of possible titles, a letter from Benchley to producer David Brown with honest feedback on the movie adaptation, and excerpts from Benchley’s book Shark Trouble highlighting his firsthand account of writing Jaws, selling it to Universal Studios, and working with Steven Spielberg. Also included is a reproduction and sketches of the iconic painting by Roger Kastel used on the original paperback cover and film poster.

Since its original publication, Jaws has spawned a movie franchise, two video games, a Universal Studios theme park attraction, and two musicals.

A New Way to Bind.

Where to start with Jaws?

I guess the size, this is a big book, add the case and it's huge.
Not thick, just...big.

First thing that comes to mind is how functional a quarter bound book is if it's the top quarter, rather than the traditional vertical binding.
To be honest I can't think of a good reason why this wouldn't work, I'm just curious as to the functionality of the design, either way.

Which brings me to the aesthetics.
Looovvve the endpapers, so evocative, gorgeous tactile paper that looks like it belongs to this book and nothing else.

The whole book is a design opus, trying out things that look amazing, suit the book (the shark fin inlaid on the top quarter of the cover is amazing, simple but very effective) and again, the detail shines.
From the "bite mark" on the signature page to the illusion of a shark in water on the cover, to the effort that went into the spine and label, it never stops delivering.

The art is fantastic.
Looks time consuming and I know from experience how difficult oil paints are to use well, so I'm impressed by the illustrations, they're more like prints of oil paintings.

Jaws is one of two books that genuinely disturbed me.
Never liked the film that much, looks tacky, but the book scared me silly, I was surprised and overjoyed to see Suntup doing it, and doing it masterfully.

Love, love, love the typeset, I know it's odd but I love to run my fingers along lines as I read them, and next to 1984 and Blood Meridian, this is my favourite Suntup to the touch, especially the press/paper combination.

The case is also next level, again, I'm curious about functionality over time, but as I said earlier, I can't think of a reason this wouldn't work either, and it's a very impressive presentation.
Bit of a magnet for fingerprints, but I can live with that given the overall impression it makes upon picking the book up.

I'll stop there, so many details to mention that it could take an essay.
A very unique Suntup Edition.

Jaws Numbered

Pretty much the book I started buying numbered editions for. The anticipation was such I thought I'd end up disappointed, but no, as always Paul and the team have excelled themselves. Overall design and quality of the book and slipcase are second to none, and it's such a chunky beast, loving seeing it tower over my other books. Thank you to all involved.

A fine publication of an iconic character! The soft touch of the end-sheets and the soft touch of the slip case are superb. High quality grade all around.

Deeper than the ocean.

That's how much I love this edition. And I just wanted a water reference. Really a superb edition.
